Out of Our Kitchen Closets is a collection of tried and true recipes submitted by members, families and friends of Congregation Sha'ar Zahav in San Francisco - a city noted both for its good food and its thriving gay community. Each entry was carefully tested and tasted. We were looking for easy to prepare recipes that taste great - and we got 150 of them! What is Gay Jewish Cooking? It is the traditional dishes of our congregants' ancestors, updated and translated for our fast-paced society. For the adventuresome, we have Japanese Pumpkin Soup that's kosher for Passover. For the traditionalist, you'll find 17 types of Kugel, and a classic California Quiche. And don't be shocked to find a slice of kiwi next to the blintzes. The Cookbook is sprinkled with the heart-warming stories that invariably surround Jewish family life - both traditional and extended. And the Introduction chronicles the ten-year history of this dynamic Congregation. No matter how you slice it, Out of Our Kitchen Closets will satisfy your hunger, warm your heart, and make you proud. So enjoy! (from the back cover)

"I am a member of Congregation Sh'ar Za'hav and I love reading about the history of how the congregation got started. Also, the recipes are like the ones from my mother and grandmother. I have the Big author cookbooks but here are ones that are from home with Bubbe's twist and flair for things which is the way I prefer to cook. I also like it because it calls for things I know that I can easily get in San Francisco Bay Area. Now picture me pinching your cheek while I say, "I'm telling you bubbula, buy da cookbook it vont hurt you and it's for a gud cause too. Now be a menche and click da add to cart buttun vatevea dat means." LOL!"

  • Rabbi made a wonderful stew from this book, and I just found it on . Good, solid cooking from people who love food.
  • It's a very good and well done book for its display (presentation an organasation) and in its purpose in getting funds for seak patients. it brings freshness, hope, love and switness. It's a part of Celestial Food. So thanks again to Sha'ar Zahav. I'd love to get in contact with Edward Penrose, the sender, to exchange ideas about this book. Would it be possible?
  • Really liked the recipes. Very authentic jewish food.i like that some of the recipes have been in families fir generations.
  • Although neither Jewish nor gay, this is one of my all-time favorite cookbooks. It is very warmly and tastefully done; the only references to gay are the title, and references to "my partner" liking some dish. It is comprised of treasured family recipes and/or those perfected over the years, and each is preceded by a brief description of why it is so special. Everything I've tried from this book has been wonderful -- and I always enjoy reading it. A great favorite, and highly recommended.
